Fundraising and Events News

Moscow Half Marathon
In May 2003 Sir Roderic Lyne, British Ambassador to the Russian Federation, our Patron, lead a team in the Moscow Half Marathon which raised over $2,000 for AMUR. Thank you to all those involved.

Russian AMUR Tiger And Leopard Day 2003
On September 27th 2003 AMUR coordinated a special Russian Amur Tiger and Leopard Day in 33 zoos across Europe & Russia from Edinburgh, Rome, and Barcelona, to Moscow and Novosibirsk. The aim of the event was to raise awareness of the Amur tiger and leopard. There was good publicity in all the countries involved. Zoos organised a whole range of activities including dancing, face painting, art classes and competitions. At Moscow Zoo a mock up of a Land Rover Defender tracking a tiger wearing a radio collar was very popular with the children! On the same day, our partner organisations in the Russian Far East organised 4 events in cities with the biggest being a street parade in Vladivostok with over 2,000 people turning out to watch. We hope that next year we can extend this exciting event to zoos in USA an Australia.

Conservation

AMUR pays for VET
AMUR is contributing $30,000 towards the cost of a veterinary survey which is being organised by the Zoological Society of London, to look at diseases in leopard territory. This is in preparation for possible Amur leopard reintroduction into the wild from zoo breed animals. The first vet leaves for Russia in early December.

AMUR meets Minister
AMUR recently organised a meeting between Amur tiger/leopard conservation experts and the Deputy Minister for the Environment of the Russian Federation. The outcome of the meeting was very positive with the Russian Government promising to work more closely with conservationists.

Illegal rifles ‘handed in’
Since May 2003 conservation officers, financed by AMUR’s partner ‘Tigris’, has run a campaign providing compensation for illegal poaching rifles handed in voluntarily in leopard habitat. A total of 26 rifles have been received and although this is a good result, it also indicates that the number of illegal weapons in the area is exceptionally high!

Radio Collars
The British International School and Anglo American School in Moscow are raising money for radio collars for both tigers and leopards.
