5 BIG CATS KILLED IN 2 MONTHS
During December 2003 3 Amur tigers were killed and in January 2004 2 Amur leopards were killed. Four hunting dogs trapped the first tiger before she was shot by poachers. The second two were killed by two young poachers (37 and 17 years old) who had found a tigress with two cubs. They shot one tiger cub dead and injured the tigress who fled with the other cub. They took the corpse of the dead cub and returned the next day to kill the tigress, cutting off her feet and head as well as the skin.

A few weeks later the young poacher was prosecuted. He explained to police that he wanted to prove to himself that he was man enough to kill a tiger! The prosecuting judge imposed a fine of $4,700 however conservationists are disappointed knowing the fine will not be paid due to a claim of poverty. Journalists visited the youth’s village home and found his house to be well kept with 4 Japanese cars in the drive and a newly painted fence!

Two leopards have been killed apparently for ‘fun’ - both corpses being left intact. Many local lawyers now feel that poachers should receive much tougher penalties and the only real deterrent would be a custodial sentence of up to 7 years.

AMUR is working closely with our partners to encourage politicians to require tougher sentences passed on people killing tigers and leopards. It is so vital to conservation that this constant loss of individuals from the population is stopped. That is why AMUR contributes funds to the anti-poaching teams and is lobbying politicians for tougher sentences.

Research shows that over 70% of all tiger deaths are caused by poaching!

NEW RESEARCH
In 2003 AMUR researched the social and economic issues threatening tigers and leopards. We now need to learn more about the villages where hunting is prevalent. That research will start soon and it is hoped, as a result, we will find ways to change the poaching behaviour.

RESCUED AND RELEASED
Some great news — a tiger was recently rescued from a snare, given a check up and released using our AMUR Land Rover Defender.
